Baby calves are born at all times of the day and night. Just like you! Even when it's -15 degrees outside. A baby calf is born without any fat on it's body. So, it can't protect itself from cold weather. That's where Farmer Scott and Farmer Pam come in. We have video cameras on the mama cows so we can keep an eye on them. We know that we need to be there to dry off the newborn calf and put it in a warmer to help it live and grow healthy and strong.
Mama cows try to dry them off with their tongue, but when it's frigid temperatures, she isn't fast enough and the moisture freezes on the calf's hair. We have an incubator that we put new born baby calves in to help dry them and to warm them up.
